  • Air Bike or Ergometer? Advantages, Disadvantages, and Differences Compared
  • September 1, 2026

An Air Bike looks like an exercise bike with a fan attached to the front – yet it provides a completely different workout experience. The resistance doesn't come from a magnet, but from air, and it has no upper limit. Below, you will learn how the air turbine system works, how it differs from a classic ergometer, and which device is right for which training goal.

    The difference in one sentence

With an ergometer, you set the target power and the machine maintains it. On an Air Bike, you give it everything you've got – and the machine resists back just as hard.

    How air resistance works

An Air Bike drives a large fan wheel via pedals and movable handles. Air resistance increases exponentially with speed: doubling your speed results in a manifold increase in resistance. There is no level 10 that eventually becomes too easy – the only limit is your own strength.

On an ergometer, a permanent magnet slows down a flywheel without physical contact. The resistance is controlled electronically and specified in watts – on the H21 Pro, for instance, from 10 to 350 watts. The device keeps this setting constant, even if you pedal slower.

    Advantages of an Air Bike

    • No upper limit. Resistance grows with you. An Air Bike will never become too easy – even after years of use.
    • Full body instead of just legs. The movable handles engage shoulders, arms, chest, and back. That's why the AsVIVA F1 is designed as a 3-in-1 machine: exercise bike, cross trainer, and ergometer in a single frame.
    • The ideal HIIT machine. Go from a standstill to full throttle and back – without switching gears, without waiting for a motor. That's exactly what this design is built for.
    • High calorie burn per minute. Because upper and lower body work simultaneously.
    • Robust and low-maintenance. A fan wheel has virtually no wearing parts. Steel frame up to 150 kg.
    • Self-regulating. Beginners and advanced users can use the same equipment without adjustments.

Disadvantages of an Air Bike – an honest look

    • It is loud. Under load, the turbine creates noticeable noise. In an apartment with thin walls or late at night in a multi-family house, this is a real drawback.
    • No watt-controlled workout. Presetting "20 minutes at 120 watts" is not possible. This machine isn't designed for power-based training plans.
    • Not for easy base endurance. At low speeds, the resistance is very light – relaxed, long sessions feel unfulfilling.
    • Larger footprint. 145 x 61 cm and 59 kg. It's not a piece of equipment for a tight corner.
    • Exhausting. That's the whole point – but if you just want to go for a relaxed cycle after work, this isn't for you.
    • No bottle holder, no USB port on the F1.

    Advantages of an ergometer

    • Measurable and planable. Watt target, adjustable heart rate limits, heart rate-controlled programs – progress can be clearly tracked.
    • Quiet. The magnet makes no physical contact. Workouts in front of the TV or late at night are no problem at all.
    • Comfortable. Upright posture, comfort saddle, low step-through – at 45 cm, getting onto the H21 Pro is very easy.
    • Ideal for long, steady sessions. Base endurance is precisely what the ergometer excels at.
    • Suitable for rehab. Controlled, adjustable exertion without sudden stress peaks.

Disadvantages of an ergometer – an honest look

    • Only the legs work. The upper body is not engaged.
    • Upper limit. Caps out at 350 watts – plenty for most, but highly trained athletes may eventually max it out.
    • Slower response during intervals. Resistance changes take a moment; this design is less suited for short, intense sprints.

Which device is right for whom?

Air Bike if you train short and hard: HIIT, Tabata, functional training workouts, or conditioning for combat sports or team sports. And if you have a room where noise isn't an issue – basement, garage, or hobby room.

Ergometer if you ride regularly and for longer durations: base endurance, weight loss through volume, cardiovascular training, rehab, or getting back into shape. And if the machine is located inside your living space.

    Conclusion

Air Bike and ergometer do not compete with each other – they serve different purposes. The Air Bike is an intensity machine: short, tough, loud, without limits. The ergometer is an endurance machine: quiet, planable, adjustable, built for long workouts.

If you can only choose one, a single question helps: Do you train in minutes or in hours? For minutes, choose the Air Bike; for hours, an ergometer.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about the Air Bike

    Is an Air Bike loud?

Yes. The air resistance is generated by a fan wheel, which produces a clearly audible rushing sound under load. The harder you pedal, the louder it gets. For apartments with thin walls, an ergometer with a magnetic brake is the better choice.

Can the resistance on an Air Bike become too light?

No. Air resistance increases exponentially with speed. There is no maximum level – the limit is set entirely by your own output.

Does an Air Bike provide a full-body workout?

Yes. Via the movable handles, your arms, shoulders, chest, and back work along with your legs as they pedal. The AsVIVA F1 is designed specifically for this as a 3-in-1 device.

Is an Air Bike suitable for weight loss?

Calorie burn per minute is high because the upper and lower body work simultaneously. However, total effort across the week remains key – comparing 20 minutes on an Air Bike to 60 minutes on an ergometer won't automatically make the Air Bike win.

Is an Air Bike suitable for beginners?

In principle yes, because the resistance adjusts automatically and nobody is overwhelmed when pedaling slowly. However, the training principle – short, highly intense efforts – takes some getting used to for beginners. Anyone starting out should increase intensity cautiously and consult a doctor first if they have pre-existing conditions.
