Cross Trainer or Ergometer? Advantages, Disadvantages, and Differences Compared

The cross trainer works the entire body standing up, while the ergometer targets the legs sitting down. Here is what that means for space requirements, joints, and workout control.

  • Cross Trainer or Ergometer? Advantages, Disadvantages, and Differences Compared
  • September 3, 2026

Cross trainers and ergometers are featured side by side in almost every comparison, even though they answer two different questions. The cross trainer trains the whole body while standing, whereas the ergometer targets the legs while sitting. Everything else – space requirements, joint strain, calorie burn, controllability – follows from this single difference.

    The Difference in One Sentence

On a cross trainer, the whole body works while standing; on an ergometer, the legs work while sitting. One burns more calories in the same amount of time, while the other allows for more precise control.

What Stride Length Reveals About a Cross Trainer

The most important spec for a cross trainer is rarely on the front page of the brochure: stride length. It determines whether the movement feels like walking or running. Our machines range between 39 cm for the C28 Runner and 53 cm for the Smart Stair Pro E50. Anyone over 1.80 m tall will notice the difference immediately – a short stride forces a choppy, shuffling movement. You won't find this trap with an ergometer, where saddle height adjusts everything.

Advantages of a Cross Trainer Compared to an Ergometer

    • More muscles in the same amount of time. Arms and core are engaged. For the same duration and perceived effort, calorie burn is higher than sitting on a bike.
    • No impact. Your foot never leaves the pedal. The movement resembles running without any shock to your knees and ankles.
    • Upright posture. If you sit all day, you don't have to spend your workout sitting, too.
    • Smooth motion with a heavy flywheel. 26 kg on the E50 compared to 16 kg on compact models – that's the difference between a fluid and a stuttering stride.

Disadvantages of a Cross Trainer Compared to an Ergometer

    • Requires height. 164 to 179 cm plus your own standing height. It's often ruled out in rooms with sloped ceilings.
    • It is heavy. 46 to 112 kg. Once set up, it stays in place; moving it around is no casual task.
    • Workload control is less precise. Resistance levels instead of watts – less precise for prescribed intervals.
    • Not for every back. If you feel unstable standing up or have balance issues, you're better off in the saddle.

Advantages of an Ergometer Compared to a Cross Trainer

    • Targeted training by numbers. Watt targets and heart-rate-controlled programs turn “a bit more strenuous” into a verifiable metric. For training plans and medical recommendations, this makes all the difference.
    • Takes up little space. 104 to 119 cm long, 135 to 161 cm high, 30 to 42 kg. It easily fits into a corner.
    • Low step-through. If you are recovering after surgery or feel unsteady standing, you can get into training without climbing up.
    • Easy to stick with. While sitting, you can read, watch TV, or talk on the phone – and that's often what determines whether equipment is still being used after eight weeks.

Disadvantages of an Ergometer Compared to a Cross Trainer

    • Upper body is left out. Arms, shoulders, and core aren't being trained.
    • Sitting is still sitting. If you spend your day in an office chair, you're extending that posture.
    • The saddle has to fit. On longer sessions, it makes or breaks the fun – trying it out matters more than any spec sheet line here.

    Which Is Right for Whom?

    • Full-body workout and calorie burn are the main focus: cross trainer.
    • Training by plan, watts, or medical recommendation: ergometer.
    • Limited space or low ceiling: ergometer.
    • Knee problems, but want running-like movement: cross trainer – provides the motion flow without the impact.
    • Getting back into exercise after injury or surgery: ergometer, thanks to the low step-through and fine adjustments.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Cross Trainers and Ergometers

Does a cross trainer burn more calories than an ergometer?

For the same duration and perceived exertion, usually yes, because arms, shoulders, and core are involved. However, intensity remains key: a tough interval workout on an ergometer beats a relaxed half hour on a cross trainer.

Which machine is gentler on the knees?

Both are impact-free. An ergometer offers additional relief because body weight rests on the saddle rather than the legs – which is why it is used more frequently in physical therapy. A cross trainer, on the other hand, offers a running-like motion without the shock.

How much ceiling height does a cross trainer require?

Add the pedal standing height (usually 15 to 25 cm) to the machine height of 164 to 179 cm. If you are 1.80 m tall, you should plan for about 2.20 m. In rooms with sloped ceilings, an ergometer is the safer choice.

What does watt mean on an ergometer?

Wattage represents actual power output, regardless of pedaling cadence and resistance level. A watt-controlled program keeps the workload constant even if you pedal slower. This is what makes structured training targets verifiable in the first place.

Can I lose weight on both machines?

Yes – consistency is what counts, not the design type. What matters more in practice is which machine you will still be using in eight weeks. If you like to read or watch TV while exercising, you'll stick with an ergometer longer; if you get bored easily, you'll get into the groove faster on a cross trainer.

What stride length do I need for my height?

As a rule of thumb: up to about 1.75 m tall, 39 to 45 cm is sufficient; above that, 50 cm or more feels significantly more comfortable. Choosing a stride length that is too short forces a choppy movement that is neither fluid nor effective in the long run.

How loud is a treadmill? Noise levels of exercise bikes in comparison
A treadmill operates at around 50 decibels – ergometers and rowing machines are well below that. Where the noise comes from and what really helps in an apartment.
