Many sports and fitness trends originate in the USA, but this trend—Zero Training—has its roots in Japan. Now you might be asking yourself: Wait, zero training, what is that supposed to mean? Because that is literally what the term Zero Training translates to. But don't worry, below we'll clarify what exactly is meant by the term Zero Training, what it is, and what benefits it is said to bring.

    What is Zero Training?

The Zero Training method was developed by Japan's Tomomi Ishimura. She is the founder of a yoga studio in New York and published the book on the method: The Zero Training Method. Essentially, it is a form of training designed to promote weight loss, but also to combat muscle pain and tone muscles. No matter your fitness level, the Zero Training Method is designed so that people of all fitness levels can perform the exercises. From beginners to well-conditioned recreational athletes: Zero Training is meant to help everyone. The exercises are based on a combination of breathing techniques and stretching exercises, taking only about 5 to 10 minutes. A central focus is placed on posture. According to Ishimura, it is crucial to return your body to a "zero position"—one that many of us lose over time due to poor posture, such as sitting for work.

The most important training areas in Zero Training

So the word Zero doesn't mean you shouldn't train at all, but refers to returning the body to what Ishimura sees as the crucial zero position or neutral posture. She focuses on body areas that she believes are overlooked in other forms of exercise: feet, hips, back, shoulders, and neck. Years of poor posture force the body into a kind of curvature, which according to the Japanese expert can lead to metabolic disorders and a sluggish metabolism. The result: increased fat accumulation, weight gain, and other physical issues. Which in turn would stand in the way of successful weight loss.

Zero Training is especially suitable for beginners and sports avoiders

Zero Training, developed by Tomomi Ishimura, appeals particularly to sports beginners and former couch potatoes. Because with just about five minutes a day, it is meant to improve posture and tone muscles. Targeted exercises are designed to help gradually return the body to its original, natural position—the aforementioned zero position. Ishimura is convinced that over time, poor posture causes us to develop various body issues such as muscle pain. Zero Training aims to reverse this exact pain, causing it to disappear entirely. The great thing about it is that all you need for the exercises is a yoga mat or a floor mat, plus a few large pillows or blankets to roll up and use as support. All exercises are beginner-friendly, and at a solid five minutes a day, the time commitment is very manageable.

    How does Zero Training work?

Everything takes place on the floor, and as described above, only minimal additional equipment like supporting pillows or rolled blankets is required. There are five stretching exercises and one strengthening exercise. The exercises may look somewhat familiar to yoga practitioners, as they resemble certain yoga elements. Breathing is key. First, focus is placed on breathing: Breathing exercise No. 1: Normal breathing. Breathing exercise No. 2: Chest breathing. Breathing exercise No. 3: Zero Training breathing, where the belly and sides are filled with air rather than the chest. Then, in the second step, relaxing exercises follow, focusing individually on arms, chest, hips, legs, and feet.

What benefits can Zero Training bring?

According to its creator Tomomi Ishimura, it is entirely possible to reduce your waist size through regular Zero Training. Furthermore, it is said to provide the following positive effects:

    • improved blood circulation
    • postural defects can be corrected, thereby reducing pain
    • improved muscle building
    • metabolism is stimulated, which can lead to higher calorie burn and weight loss
    • prevents joint discomfort

Can you really lose weight with Zero Training?

First of all, it should be noted that there are currently no studies or research confirming this claim. What is worth noting, however, is that due to the simple and doable nature of the exercises, the barrier to entry is very low, especially for untrained and overweight individuals. In other words, someone who previously disliked moving around may feel motivated to try the exercises and establish a routine. Furthermore, the exercises take a maximum of 10 minutes to complete. That is a manageable time commitment that should be possible even for busy and stressed people. Combined with a healthy diet, this can serve as the foundation for a more active daily life. In addition, the exercises help anyone who sits a lot to achieve better posture. Regularly returning your body to a neutral zero position can help promote a more upright posture.

Good posture and a strong core are good for you

In general, good posture helps prevent back pain from developing in the first place and relieves emerging discomfort. Additional light stretching or loosening exercises plus relaxation techniques help build better body awareness. If you want to do something good for your body more often, active relaxation of muscles and fasciae is helpful alongside regular exercise. Stretching and loosening your muscles on a foam roller in the evening is certainly beneficial. If you already have an exercise mat on the floor anyway, you can give your fasciae a little extra attention with a roller or ball after your Zero Training session. Or perhaps you can get yourself a massage gun to treat pain or tension points via vibration, either targeted at a specific spot or across a larger area.
