Walking at your desk while working – the idea sounds like the solution for anyone sitting eight hours a day. It works, too, but not quite the way most product photos show it. There are three prerequisites that need to be met, and one of them has nothing to do with the treadmill.
The prerequisite hardly anyone talks about
A treadmill under your desk requires a height-adjustable desk. The device adds height, you stand on it – combined, that quickly adds 15 to 20 cm to your standing height. At a standard seated desk of 72 cm, you will end up working with raised shoulders, and after two days your neck will hurt.
If you don't have a height-adjustable desk, you still have an option: use the device for phone calls, camera-off video conferences, and reading instead of typing. That is more realistic than the idea of spending the entire workday walking – and it is enough to get your steps in.
The three numbers that determine desk compatibility
| Value | Why it matters | Sensible range |
| Step-up height | determines how high the desk needs to be adjusted | under 15 cm, ideally around 12 cm |
| Speed | above this, typing becomes impossible | up to 6 km/h, working happens at 2 – 3,5 |
| Running surface | too short forces small, shuffling steps | from 110 cm |
The step-up height is the most important one, yet it often isn't even mentioned in listings. Our Walking Pad T25 has a height of 12 cm with a running surface of 120 cm – that is right in the range where a height-adjustable desk can still easily compensate for the difference.
At what speed can you actually work?
- 1 to 2 km/h – Typing works. Very slow walking, your hands stay steady enough for the keyboard. It is more than enough to accumulate steps on your counter.
- 2 to 3,5 km/h – Reading, phone calls, meetings. The standard range. Your voice stays steady as long as you don't go any faster.
- 4 to 6 km/h – Workout, not work. Here, footsteps can be heard on the microphone, and typing is out of the question. This is the range for your lunch break.
A realistic mix is two to three hours of walking spread throughout the day, with the rest spent sitting. Anyone aiming to walk for eight hours usually quits after a week.
What else gets in the way in a home office – and what helps
- The neighbor downstairs. At a walking pace, a walking pad is quiet, but structure-borne noise still travels into the ceiling. A floor protection mat decouples the device from the floor; this is the single most effective measure. Read all about it in How loud is a treadmill?
- The microphone. Up to about 3,5 km/h, no one notices anything in video conferences. Above that, the rhythm of your steps becomes audible – a headset with a directional microphone helps more than walking slower.
- Storage space afterwards. A walking pad without handrails can be leaned upright against the wall or slid under the sofa. Folded up, our T25 measures 82 × 54,7 × 12,9 cm.
- Cables. Sounds trivial, but it isn't: power cables and the remote control must be positioned so you don't step on them.
Walking pad or classic treadmill for the desk?
For the workplace, only a walking pad makes sense – meaning a device without handrails and without a protruding console. A classic treadmill has a height of 130 to 170 cm and fits under no desk. If you want both – working and proper running workouts – you either need two devices or have to make a choice. We compared the differences in Treadmill or Walking Pad?.
What this does for your body
To be honest: Walking at 2 to 3 km/h isn't a workout, it is a replacement for sitting. The benefit isn't in calorie consumption, but in keeping your back, hips, and cardiovascular system from remaining stationary for eight hours. If you want to lose weight or build endurance, you need additional proper training sessions – and for that, the same device offers enough reserve with up to 6 km/h and 5 % incline.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about treadmills at the desk
Does a treadmill fit under any desk?
No. The device adds height, and you stand on top of it – adding 15 to 20 cm to your total standing height. At a fixed 72 cm desk, you would end up working with raised shoulders. A height-adjustable desk is a requirement, not an optional accessory.
How fast can you walk while typing?
Up to about 2 km/h, your hands remain steady enough for the keyboard. Between 2 and 3,5 km/h, reading, phone calls, and video conferences work well. Above that, typing becomes impossible and your steps are heard on the microphone.
How high can a walking pad for the desk be?
Under 15 cm, ideally around 12 cm. Every centimeter of step-up height needs to be compensated for by the desk. Devices with handrails are out of the question for the workplace because they collide with the desk surface.
Can my colleagues hear me walking during a video conference?
Up to about 3,5 km/h, usually not. Above that, the rhythm of your steps becomes audible on the microphone. A headset with a directional microphone helps more than walking slower, as it filters out ambient noise anyway.
How many hours a day are realistic?
Two to three hours, spread throughout the day, with the rest spent sitting. Anyone aiming for eight hours usually won't last a week. The benefit comes from consistency, not duration.
Does walking at the desk replace my workout?
No. Walking at 2 to 3 km/h replaces sitting, not your workout. For endurance or weight loss, you need additional sessions with higher speed or incline – a device with 6 km/h and 5 % incline offers enough reserve for that.
Will the device disturb the neighbors downstairs?
At a walking pace, airborne noise is low, but structure-borne noise travels through the frame into the ceiling. A floor protection mat decouples the device from the floor and is the single most effective measure – more effective than a quieter motor.
