Weight benches for strength training at home

They are indispensable for ambitious strength training: weight benches. These workout stations for the home make it possible to build specific muscle groups efficiently within your own four walls. In addition to using barbells, weights, and dumbbell sets, weight benches are also ideal for strength exercises such as sit-ups, etc. In addition, they can be expanded into complete home gyms with the right equipment.

Structure and functionality of a weight bench

Whether as a standalone device or as the centerpiece of a complex home gym: A weight bench must be one thing above all – stable. This is ensured by the high-quality steel construction of its frame. Typically, the weight bench stands on two metal feet, which are wider than the bench itself for stabilization purposes. A padded surface, which in most cases is split into two parts, serves as the seating and lying area: The smaller part is intended as the seat and is height-adjustable on good weight benches; the longer part is the backrest, which can be individually adjusted in its tilt angle. Often, a rack for barbells is already attached at the head end of the bench. In addition, many modern models feature padded footrests extending from the seat, providing valuable support during exercises such as crunches.

Before use, the weight bench is first adjusted to the user's height. To do this, its height is adjusted so that the seat is approximately at the athlete's knee height. Next, the backrest is brought into the appropriate position for the intended exercise. After these quick adjustments, nothing stands in the way of a thorough, sweaty training session.

Areas of application and exercises for the weight bench

Weight benches are among the most important components for classic strength training. Whether for building and expanding muscles on the biceps or abdomen or for strengthening the back muscles: Functional training is just as possible with these comfortable fitness devices as isolated strength training. Lying flat on your back, weights are pressed with barbells. This exercise is also possible with an inclined backrest – the so-called incline bench press is particularly suitable for building the upper chest muscles. On the other hand, bench pressing with a decline backrest – the so-called decline bench press – is recommended only for real weight bench pros. With an upright backrest, a wide variety of exercises can be performed while seated using dumbbell sets, such as the popular bicep curls. Kneeling on the bench with one leg also allows for very effective exercises with dumbbell sets – especially for developing the shoulder and back muscles. And lying head-down, an incline bench is ideal for challenging sit-up exercises. However, the prerequisite is that a footrest for hooking the feet is mounted on the weight bench.

When using a weight bench in conjunction with strength-building barbell training, the presence of a suitable rack where the barbell can be rested is of course important. Many modern weight benches already feature an integrated rack at the head end. Generally, beginners in particular should still have a so-called spotter with them when bench pressing: a
workout partner who coaches them and makes sure they don't injure themselves during exercises with heavy barbells.

Factors to consider when buying a weight bench

When buying a weight bench, fitness fans have a few things to consider. First of all, it is essential to ensure that there is enough space to set up the exercise equipment. In contrast to smaller devices such as vibration trainers, weight benches offer little flexibility – so at best, the setup room should be fully reserved for the fitness bench. When measuring, not only the length and width of the weight bench itself should play a role, but there should also be sufficient space available for a rack for barbell training.

In addition to the question of space, factors such as the maximum allowable weight, the adjustability of individual components, the length and width of the backrest, the outer material, as well as the padding of the lying surface
must be considered. When it comes to adjustability: Ideally, a weight bench should be height-adjustable and feature an adjustable backrest. This can then be set completely flat if needed, inclined, or brought into a vertical position as a seat back. A flat, stable surface is important for bench presses, the inclined position is required for exercises like sit-ups, and the seated position for working with dumbbell sets. The maximum allowable total weight is specified for every weight bench – and includes the athlete's body weight plus the mass of the training weights. Since even strength training beginners are quickly able to handle more than 50 kg on the bench press, sufficient headroom regarding maximum load should be ensured.
