A toned washboard stomach doesn't just look good. A well-trained six-pack also contributes to overall fitness and health. In addition, it forms an ideal foundation for many other athletic activities.

Get a Washboard Stomach with the Right Strength Training

Warm up your body before strength training, e.g., through jogging, cross trainer, or cycling. Muscles need sufficient recovery phases between workout phases. Train a maximum of two to three times per week. For effective abdominal muscle training, you should set new challenges from time to time, for example with weights and dumbbells. Increase your difficulty level slowly and steadily. Train the different muscle groups in a balanced ratio and at the same time train your back as well. Thanks to targeted abdominal exercises with and without fitness equipment, you can effectively train your core and will ultimately be rewarded with a great six-pack. Pay attention to the correct execution of movement when training your abs. The exercises are equally suitable for beginners and advanced users, as well as for men and women.

    Six-Pack Training with Fitness Equipment

Fitness equipment has the advantage of providing an extra incentive to train. In addition, it supports proper movement sequences and correct posture during workouts. Back pain or joint damage can be better prevented with this training support.

    weight bench

The weight bench is the ideal training device for the core. You can use it to train abdominal presses with various weights.

    home gym

The home gym is the universal training device for the whole body. You can use it to perform chest flies, lat pulldowns, bench presses, and much more.

    ab trainer

Ab trainers are ideal for the straight and lateral abdominal muscles. There are two types:

    • Ab rollers
    • Leg raise machines

With the ab roller, you train the curling movement of the upper body while lying down. It should be ergonomically shaped and have a non-slip profile. On a leg raise station, the lifting of the legs is imitated. Through isometric muscle tension (holding), you can intensify the workout.

Complementary Six-Pack Exercises Without Fitness Equipment

We have put together a workout program for six-pack abs here that can be used for additional support with fitness equipment or on its own to train the abdominal muscles. Upper abs, lower abs, and oblique abdominal muscles are trained equally. Perform each exercise in 3 sets of 10 - 15 repetitions.

    Upper Abs

    1. Bent-leg sit-ups

Lying on your back, lift both legs with your feet crossed. Interlace your hands behind your head and move your upper body toward your knees. Inhale during the upward movement and exhale on the way down.

    2. Crunches

Lying on your back, place your feet hip-width apart and place your arms behind your head. Pull in your stomach and raise your upper body at a 45-degree angle while inhaling. Maintain a straight line from your neck to your spine. Exhale during the lifting phase and inhale again as you lower back down. Generate the force from your abdominals, not your arms.

    Lower Abs

    1. Leg drops

Lying on your back, lift both legs straight up. Alternately move your extended legs up and down. Do not lower your legs too far down to prevent arching your lower back. Perform the exercise for about 30 seconds. Next, lift your legs and cross them over and under alternately for 30 seconds. You can either extend your arms out to the sides or place them along your body.

    2. Russian twists

The Russian twist builds firm muscle groups in the lower abs. Sit on the floor and place your heels in front of you. Lean your upper body back slightly. Alternatively, you can perform the exercise with your legs raised. Now rotate your upper body alternately to the right and left. To intensify the workout, you can also hold a weight.

    Obliques

    1. Side planks

Lying on your side, lift your legs and upper body, supporting yourself with one arm directly under your shoulder. Place the other arm on your hip or extend it upward. To intensify the workout, move your hips up and down alternately without touching the floor. Then switch sides.

    2. Side crunches

Lying on your back, cross your left leg over your right. Lift your upper body and bring your left elbow toward your right knee. Inhale during the upward movement and exhale on the way down. Repeat the exercise with your right leg crossed over your left.

The Right Nutrition for Muscle Building and Fat Loss

The combination of regular training and a healthy diet is essential for workout success. Simultaneously with muscle building, body fat should be reduced. Fat loss is beneficial for your six-pack as well as for your health and overall fitness.

    Nutrition Tips for Abdominal Training

    • Drink plenty of water
Drinking water is considered an insider tip for fat loss. It is recommended to drink two glasses of water before every meal. Throughout the day, you should drink a total of 2 to 3 liters of water.

    • Eat slowly and mindfully
It takes the body about 20 minutes before a feeling of fullness sets in while eating. Eating small bites and chewing thoroughly helps reduce body fat.

    • The right nutrients
Your muscles need the right nutrients to grow. The most important ones are proteins, found primarily in meat, fish, eggs, legumes, dairy products, and nuts. Carbohydrates and fats in proper proportions are also very important. An ideal amount is 150 grams of carbohydrates per day, e.g. potatoes or rice.
