Recumbent ergometers: The comfortable alternative to classic bike ergometers

Recumbent ergometers, also known as recumbent bikes, are among the modern fitness machines that are enjoying growing popularity for home use. This is mainly due to the high level of comfort the devices offer during workouts. In addition, recumbent ergometers impress with a wide range of applications and special benefits for therapeutic training measures. In the comfortable recumbent position on these ergometers, workouts to increase endurance as well as applications from the rehab sector and fat-burning sessions can be carried out. The target group for this fitness equipment is also particularly broad: In addition to ambitious athletes who use recumbent ergometers for cardio training, beginners, people wanting to lose weight, rehab patients, people with back problems, pregnant women, and the elderly belong to the user group. The latter especially appreciate the low step-through design of these devices.

Structure and functionality of a recumbent ergometer
The components of a recumbent ergometer are similar to those of a classic exercise bike ergometer: in addition to the frame, ergometers feature a flywheel, pedals, handles, seat, heart rate monitor, and training computer. Recumbent ergometers also have a backrest. Due to the special structure and unusual frame construction, training on a recumbent ergometer takes place in a semi-reclined position. Besides protecting the spine, this has the great side effect of working the leg and glute muscles more effectively on a recumbent bike than on a classic upright ergometer. Furthermore, the very comfortable exercise posture makes it easier for casual users and beginners to stick with their workout. For advanced users, the body position offers the advantage of incorporating additional upper body exercises during training – such as dumbbell exercises.

Generally, however, a recumbent ergometer is primarily designed for training the lower body: pedaling sets the flywheel in motion and keeps it running. Incidentally, a flywheel weight starting from approx. 10 kg is considered ideal. In order to keep an eye on your pulse during training, heart rate measurement is carried out via a chest strap or hand sensors. The latter, however, are considered rather inaccurate – so anyone using a recumbent ergometer for interval training, target zone training, or therapeutic measures should definitely rely on accurate measuring devices such as chest straps.

Areas of application for recumbent ergometers
Recumbent ergometers were originally developed primarily for rehabilitation, originating from therapeutic concepts. That is why they stand out compared to many other cardio exercise machines due to their exceptionally ergonomic design. This makes recumbent ergometers one of the best devices for therapeutic cardiovascular training and recovery training after injuries, surgery, or back problems. But of course, it's not just patients in rehabilitation or physical therapy who benefit from the specific advantages of these machines: recumbent ergometers have conquered the home market largely because they enable targeted, fitness-oriented cardio workouts at a high level, improve endurance, and serve exceptionally well for fat burning. Like many cardio devices, they are less suitable for targeted muscle building.

Due to their high comfort factor, recumbent ergometers are among the most popular machines for pregnant women who want to stay active and fit at home. Older users and overweight individuals also appreciate the very relaxed seating position on a recumbent ergometer compared to a classic ergometer, which relieves strain on the joints.

Training correctly with the recumbent ergometer
Different forms of training can be implemented with a recumbent ergometer. For example, the machines are ideal for interval training sessions. This training method is particularly effective for targeted stamina building. It is based on short, but very demanding exertion phases where the body is pushed to its limit within 1–3 minutes. After such an exertion phase, a rest period is taken to allow the heart rate to drop back down. To cope with the enormous demands of interval training, an athlete should be physically fit. Furthermore, target zone training plays an important role when using recumbent ergometers: this refers to training within a heart rate zone considered optimal for the respective user. This type of endurance training is not only well-suited for strengthening the cardiovascular system, but also for burning fat.

No matter which training method you wish to perform with a recumbent ergometer: when adjusting the machine, always ensure an individually optimal seating position. The rule of thumb is: the seat should be adjusted so that the entire foot engages with the pedal surface, not just the toes. Furthermore, it is recommended to set the distance so that the knees do not have to be fully extended while pedaling. This posture protects the knee joints. The pedaling resistance must also be adjusted: it should be selected so that the user can make smooth movements without stalling. Depending on individual strength, resistance must be increased or decreased before training.
