  • Beat Spring Fatigue
  • March 8, 2021

Many people know the feeling of spring fatigue: you feel lethargic, weak, and just can't get going in the morning. Even if the morning sun is shining on your face, you simply can't wake up properly and just want to sleep.

When the winter days get longer again, bringing earlier sunrises and later sunsets, many people paradoxically feel sluggish and tired. Yet we should be celebrating the extra daylight and starting our day in a good mood and fully awake. But no – as spring begins, weather-sensitive and vulnerable individuals are especially affected by spring fatigue. While some aspects can be explained scientifically, the phenomenon of spring lethargy is still not completely understood.

So, what do we know about it, and how can we actively combat spring fatigue through sports and other activities? Let's break it down.

From Hibernation into Spring Fatigue – Why Are We Tired?

Every year from February to April, many people experience the exact same symptoms: they feel tired, unmotivated, and sluggish. Getting up in the morning is sheer agony—they'd much rather stay in bed a little longer. After work in the evening, all they want to do is collapse onto the couch and not move. You feel unbalanced, permanently exhausted, and perhaps even irritable. Some suffer from sleep disturbances or increased headaches. The arrival of spring isn't welcomed as enthusiastically as the snowdrops, daffodils, fresh green leaves, and chirping birds would suggest.

One of the main reasons for spring fatigue lies within our bodily processes: our system simply can't keep up with the hormonal shift so quickly. Melatonin, which accumulates in higher amounts during winter, is our “sleep hormone”. These stores are fully loaded after the dark winter months. In contrast, our serotonin and dopamine reserves tend to be depleted after winter, even though both are crucial for regulating our mood. As temperatures rise, our body is effectively pulled out of hibernation. Warmer weather dilates the blood vessels in the skin, creating an automated cooling effect. However, this also causes blood pressure to drop, leading to classic symptoms like fatigue and lethargy.

Actively Combat Spring Fatigue with Exercise and Sports

So, what can you do to make this spring slump vanish quickly or prevent it from hitting hard in the first place? Experts recommend actively countering spring-related fatigue and exhaustion with more exercise and fresh air. Ideally, simply combine the two. This could be a daily walk during your lunch break or a short jog in the morning. The main thing is to soak up some fresh air and sunlight. Physical activity raises serotonin levels, making us feel happier and more alert. Paired with fresh air, it's the perfect remedy to actively fight spring lethargy.

Activities like Nordic walking, jogging, or cycling are ideal for this. Swimming is also a great option, which pairs well with Kneipp hydrotherapy, alternating hot/cold baths, and a sauna session. This boosts your immune defenses and overall immune system. Your circulation gets going, and the increased serotonin leaves you feeling happy and energized.

Of course, exercising in the fresh air is not a must – you can just as well get on your treadmill, your cross trainer , or your stepper at home regularly for a session of cardio exercise. But daily, extended walks also work wonders. Discover new paths in a forest near you or nice new walking routes in your city. You will see: The fresh forest air will calm you physically and mentally and recharge you with new energy.

Tips for Activities to Beat Spring Fatigue

More tips to help you manage spring fatigue symptoms:

    • Healthy & energy-rich food: Plenty of vegetables, fresh fruit, good nuts, and adequate hydration help you feel more vital and alert. Grapes, pineapples, apples, and bananas, for example, are types of fruit that contain traces of serotonin.

    • It's better to eat several smaller meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals that sit heavy in your stomach.

    • Iron-rich foods and spicy ingredients: incorporate chilies, radishes, and ginger into your diet, as spicy food boosts your metabolism. Dried apricots, oranges, red bell peppers, and pistachios are examples of foods that contain relatively high amounts of iron, which enhances blood formation. Dried figs are rich in magnesium, ensuring a more efficient metabolism and helping combat fatigue.

    • Light: Ideally, combine a walk (exercise) with soaking up sunshine. Take a short break on a park bench and lift your face to the warm sunbeams. Don't forget to apply sunscreen beforehand! In winter, a good daylight lamp on your desk helps provide your body with a healthy dose of daylight.

    • Preparing for sleep: Make sure to turn off your TV and laptop at least an hour before going to bed. This makes it easier for your body to release more melatonin. Doing so improves your sleep quality and increases the chances of waking up feeling more rested and energized for the day.

    • Play upbeat and fast-paced favorite music: this boosts your mood. Dancing along is explicitly encouraged—it gets your circulation going!

    • There are an incredible number of acupressure points along the upper edges of your outer ears. A self-massage can help: place your thumb on one side and your index finger on the other side of the outer ear, and rub the edge for one to two minutes. This stimulates circulation and can ward off tiredness.

By maintaining an active lifestyle during winter, you lay a solid foundation to avoid slipping into spring fatigue in the first place. But if you do start feeling sluggish and unmotivated around February, the tips above will certainly help make your symptoms vanish quickly.
