Superfood chia seeds

Popular chia seeds have firmly established themselves here too, but how healthy is this "superfood" really? In today's article, you'll learn everything about the origin, effects, and nutritional content of chia seeds.

Chia seeds: What makes them so healthy?

For years, they have been touted on trendy Instagram accounts and food blogs around the globe: so-called 'superfoods'. Goji berries, pomegranate seeds, and acai berries are praised as superfoods that deliver a wealth of valuable nutrients and are considered exceptionally healthy. Chia seeds are also classified as a superfood. But is that really true? Where do these tiny, unassuming seeds come from, and what valuable nutrients do they actually contain? Let's find out and take a closer look at chia seeds!

Chia – the ancient pseudo-cereal of the Incas and Aztecs

Chia seeds originally hail from Mexico and Guatemala, where they have been a staple of the local diet for thousands of years. The plant belongs to the sage family and the oilseed group, similar to flaxseed, sesame, or poppy seeds. The small, mostly black or gray seeds are only 1 to 2 mm in size and were used by the Aztecs and Mayans as energy-boosting superfood. No wonder, as chia seeds are packed with healthy nutrients: they are considered exceptionally high in fiber, rich in protein, and loaded with antioxidants. And as if that weren't enough, they also feature an exceptionally high content of healthy omega-3 fatty acids and provide vitamins B1, B3, and E.

What exact health benefits do chia seeds offer?

These tiny seeds deliver a truly impressive array of beneficial ingredients. For that reason alone, the nickname 'superfood' is well deserved. So, what exactly is inside chia seeds?

Here is a summary of their key ingredients:

    • Source of protein: Chia seeds supply the body with an impressive amount of approx. 21 grams per 100 grams of seeds. This makes these power seeds a favorite among vegans, who naturally need to find good alternative protein sources outside of dairy, meat, and fish to keep their bodies adequately supplied.

    • Dietary fiber: There is also plenty of this per 100 grams, namely 34 grams of dietary fiber.

    • Calcium: In addition to phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and copper, chia seeds contain roughly five times as much calcium as milk.

    • They act as antioxidants, which help protect cells.

    • Chia contains a large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

What should you keep in mind when consuming chia seeds?

There are a few key points consumers should keep in mind regarding chia seeds:

    1. Chia seeds absorb water and expand significantly. This creates a heightened sense of fullness, which is why they are often soaked and eaten as pudding for breakfast. If you want to consume them unsoaked (for instance, as a salad topping or on a smoothie or bowl), make sure to drink plenty of additional fluids. The seeds will continue to expand in your stomach.

    2. In Europe, a maximum daily limit of 15 grams is generally recommended. Recommendations in the US are somewhat more generous, suggesting staying under 40 grams per day. There are simply not enough conclusive studies yet to provide reliable information on the long-term effects of the seeds.

    3. They are well tolerated by the vast majority of people, but in rare cases, especially with allergy-sensitive individuals, allergic reactions to the seeds may occur. Therefore, it is best to start with a small amount or sneak a spoonful of chia pudding from a friend's bowl to try it first.

    4. Since they are classified as pseudo-cereals, they are gluten-free, making them an attractive alternative for people with celiac disease.

    5. They can be soaked overnight in water and eaten as a breakfast alternative with a dash of cinnamon and fresh berries, or added to a healthy smoothie. If adding them to a smoothie, be sure to let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes to give the seeds time to expand.

    6. Due to their gel-like consistency when soaked, chia seeds can be used quite well as a vegan egg alternative; there are numerous recipe and application suggestions on vegan baking and cooking blogs.

So, are chia seeds a superfood now or not?

The question could also be rephrased: What negative aspects are there regarding chia seeds? The fact that the seeds really bring a lot of good nutrients and properties is fairly undisputed. So yes: You could certainly label them with the term "superfood". Nevertheless, there are a few points that should be viewed critically and where individual common sense is required.

For one thing, there is the ecological footprint of chia: Climate change is undoubtedly in full swing, and the debate surrounding foods imported from extremely distant countries like Central or South America can and should be held. So ask yourself whether you want to buy (expensive) chia seeds from Central America or whether alternatives such as flaxseeds, good nuts, or oils don't do the job just as well. And if you buy chia seeds, be sure to pay attention to organic quality. In the Consumer Advice Center's article on chia seeds, reference is made to occasionally detected mold infestation and to the fact that the seeds are often treated with plant hormones to support synchronous germination.

The seeds really have excellent properties and ingredients; I have also used them several times and like to stir them into yogurt now and then or bake them into bread. Recently, however, I have increasingly returned to simply using good flaxseeds as a bread addition, which share many similar properties with chia seeds. Therefore, one can say yes, they have absolute "superfood" potential, but are only sensible in moderation—both in terms of quantity and from an ecological perspective.
