Put simply, fat metabolism – also known as lipid metabolism – is about converting fats and fat-like substances into energy. It is therefore a truly important metabolic pathway, especially for athletes. The fats are broken down into various fatty acid chains and enter the blood as triglycerides, among other things, from where they are transported further into muscle tissue and adipose tissue. To metabolize them, the body requires oxygen. Stored fats are therefore a type of reserve that can be converted into energy when needed. But fats are not only needed as a source of energy; the body also uses them, for example, as structural fat, which surrounds essential organs with a protective layer, cushioning and protecting them during sudden movements.
Fat metabolism and exercise: How are they connected?
First of all, we need to clarify the following: fat metabolism training fundamentally has nothing to do with fat burning; they are two completely different things. Instead, fat metabolism training is about providing energy as efficiently as possible during varying levels of physical exertion. There are basically two different ways your body accesses its own energy reserves during endurance sports : aerobic and anaerobic energy production . Your body can derive energy from consumed fats or carbohydrates. At higher intensities and exertion levels, your body takes in less oxygen and burns more carbohydrates than fats to generate energy at that moment. This is called anaerobic metabolism, or energy production 'without oxygen.' Examples of such types of exercise include HIT/HIIT workouts , where you go all out for a short period and train your body at a high level of intensity. On the other hand, if you train at lower intensity over a longer session – such as moderate jogging , cycling , or swimming – your body tends to burn more fats than carbohydrates with the help of oxygen. Training fat metabolism – but how?
Now you might conclude: If aerobic metabolism – i.e. training at a lower intensity – relies more on fat cells as an energy source, shouldn't we all just go jogging? The answer is no. Because if you train exclusively in the moderate endurance zone, your body gets used to it and slows down your metabolism over time! And that certainly shouldn't be the point. The mix of endurance sessions and high-intensity interval training like HIIT will boost you and your fat metabolism much better in the long run.
Note: If your goal is weight reduction , it doesn't matter whether you burn more fat or carbohydrates. The only thing that matters is a negative carbohydrate balance.
Simply put: You need to burn more calories than you consume – and an intense workout session simply burns more calories and is therefore more efficient than long, moderate endurance sessions.
So the best combination is a mix of cardio training and interval training . On the one hand, cardio training raises your stress threshold and allows you to stay in the aerobic zone longer, which in turn boosts fat loss. Additional HIIT and strength training , however, is a powerful lever to increase energy expenditure.

Don't eat before training: Doing a workout on an empty stomach in the morning means that muscle glycogen stores are virtually depleted. The body then relies more on fat cells as energy reserves. However, the workout should not be too long or too intense, as this carries the risk of premature hypoglycemia.

Caffeine intake increases the release of free fatty acids. Having a double espresso or green tea before your workout can therefore have a positive impact on your fat metabolism.

Lower-carb diet: There are athletes who live and train according to the train-low-compete-high method. They complete their training sessions with glycogen stores as empty as possible and only increase their carbohydrate intake again during the competition phase.
